Week 5
Let's take a field trip!!

Hands-on learning with a lot of fun thrown in.  We walked down the street to our local beach area known as "The Sands". There was no pre-planned agenda for what we were going to do, it was find something interesting that we can discuss and learn about.  We found sharks teeth, numerous sea shells, fiddler crabs, sea snails, oysters, clams and checked out the catch of someone who was fishing.  We learned how to throw a cast net to catch some shrimp and hoe to bait a set a crab trap off the dock to catch some Blue Crab.

When we returned to the classroom we turned our adventure into some quality art work and interesting scientific writing in our journals. There was a lot of information for us to use for several good lessons that we also tied into ELA with reading books about the ocean and the animals that live in it.

Pictures of the fun are shown below!!!!!

  1. Oh, how I wish our school was closer to something more exciting than a four-lane bypass! We have some green grounds, but nothing truly explorable. Your students look so interested working together toward discovery. This past summer, my family went to the beach, and my father and I scoured the beach like little kids searching out shark's teeth. It was incredible to find so many. We had never on any of our previous beach trips been so eager to find them; however, once you know what you are looking for, and find one, it is hard to stop.

  2. John, I love the fact that great field trips are a short walk for you and your classes! Have you taken the Master Naturalist class with Chris Marsh and the Lowcountry Institute? If you haven't you would love it! You could probably teach it!

    1. Chris and I are good friends, his wife used to work at our school. I keep meaning to get around to it, but other things keep coming up.
